  About the Archive

This digital archive started at the end of October 1997. The images are colour and consist of channels 1,4 and 8. The images are resampled by a factor of 4. All quicklooks are from data received in Perth. The quicklooks show exactly what the satellite sees. The distortion is due to 3 factors: the earth's curvature and rotation and the wide field of view of the sensor. These quicklooks have had no geometric correction applied whatsoever. The metadata for each quicklook image has the following format:

SeaWiFS ooooo OCT 31 12:00 1997 WST
Direction : direction Lines : 5000

where :

  • ooooo is the satellite orbit number,
  • direction is either ascending (heading northwards) or descending (heading southwards).

The search facility uses index files for a quicker response time. These files are updated each day. This may result in more recent passes not being found even though they do exist in the quicklook archive.

As of 10th February 1998 the SeaWiFS data has been encoded.
