  About the Archive

The Land Surface Temperature (LST) images are derived from NOAA-AVHRR channels 4 and 5 using the algorithm developed by Jupp, D.L.B (1989). A full reference is at the bottom of the page. Each morning at least one NOAA-12 or NOAA-14 pass is processed and placed on this web site between 05:00 and 06:30 AM. Clouds usually show up as white in the images and the gray areas are outside the range of the satellite. Temperatures less than the lowest marking on the temperature scale also show up as white.
